Not a long time ago I wrote an answer to question Should freelancer’s hourly rates on Upwork/Freelancer be based on the country they’re living in? on Quora so i decided to give you little bit more extended version of this here:
Freelancing is imagined as a worldwide business and you should treat it like that. You are not selling a service from one country to another country, you are selling a service from internet to some country.
There is a huge importance in this because if for someone in some poor country 20$ are huge money, for someone else in let’s say Silicon Valley it is nothing. That is why prices should be organized and settled on the world level using as an example and role model prices of American and European market because their prices are higher.
Why it is important to follow higher prices?
We all can undervalue ourself and do 1000$ job for 100$ (because we need money, or we are desperate, or we want to screw someone… whatever ) and knowing that the normal price on the market is 1000$.
What will happen next is that people will start following your example, because you are not the only one with those problems (desperate, in need for money, or something worse ) so prices on global freelancing market will low down and you will never be able to charge 1000$ for 1000$ because that job will lose it’s value. And guess what? You won’t be the only one unable to charge that money.
Conclusion: freelancers hate freelancers who are undervaluing work and prices.
We as a freelancers are already facing this problem and fighting a battle with freelancers (usually beginners, with low quality) from third world countries who are ready to literally everything to get the job for no matter what money. Believe me, I am facing this and many of my friends freelancers are facing the same too.
That is why it is VERY important to generate your price based on your experience, knowledge, reviews and possibilities, and not in any case based on country you are coming from. In this case your country is internet.
You canand see how my profile looks there, maybe you can understand get something from it.
For example, if to follow your example: I am a Serb, lived in Austria and right now living in Russia – to which country I need to be focused when I am writing prices for my freelancing? Great, you got the point! 🙂
